Stage two: iterations and adaptations part two

Image
I decided to use my developed letterforms from what I had done previously to then use as part of my practice-based research within the method of screen printing as this was suggested to me in exploring. Below you will see images showing my process in setting up to screen print one of my refined ideas to explore. Photo showing me setting up my screen (Jones, 2023) Photo showing me setting up my screen (Jones, 2023) Video showing me running some test prints (Jones, 2023) I found myself fully immersed in the art of making whilst using only the processing nature of screen print and different materials in paper stock and acrylic paint, as my primary source of materials to use. I feel this is partly what materiality connotes, especially in my own practice which I feel I am starting to establish.   Below you will see some of my final outcomes from my iteration stage supporting my own practice-based research. I was very happy with...

Stage two: iterations and adaptations part one

Image
After returning from Krakow, I felt that I had a better mindset towards materiality and how it supports my own practice-based research. I decided to get stuck in now by making things, this is another area of my own practice that I love to do. I decided to use the initial sketches that I had done previously to then transfer them over to my Mac by refining the letters. I decided to use Adobe Illustrator as this is part of my own practice as a graphic designer and is best accurate to use when designing for typography at this stage because working with grid systems seen in the images here allows you to create accuracy within your design decision-making. The image shows the iteration and development stages created by Jordan Jones (2023) Whilst exploring the Alef letter by design, I decided to look into the work of designer and typographer Nigel Cottier. I knew that I had a copy of Cottier's Letterform Variation book, so I decided to ex...

Stage one: Exploring type design through materiality

I was due to go on holiday to Krakow in Poland so I decided to continue the exploration of the letter Alef. Below are further sketch iterations while having coffee before my wife and I set off for a walking tour of the Jewish district in Poland. I wanted to use my time wisely by investigating my surroundings in the Jewish district in Krakow and so I decided it was beneficial for me to document the day by taking lots of photos.  Images show photos taken from my sketchbook of the iteration stage of the Hebrew letter Aleph Images show photos taken from my sketchbook of the iteration stage of the Hebrew letter Aleph   Below are two images taken from an old Jewish bookshop, that we discovered on our walking tour. It was originally an old Jewish Synagogue that ended up becoming a bookshop in more recent years. What I found interesting, was the array of inspiring artefacts inside and items that could be purchased, some of which b...

The importance of using a research blog

Image
This post outlines my notes from watching Jac's tutorial on the importance of having a research blog and what I needed to consider when uploading posts. Below is the video that I watched and took notes from which allowed me to think about the What, Who, How, Why, and Can.   Using a Research Blog for your MA. (Jac, 2020). Panopto. https://port.cloud.panopto.eu/Panopto/   Pages/Viewer.aspx?id=e193c30a-18c1-408d-ad4a-ac330088cc55 Notes taken showing my thoughts from Jac's video on starting a research blog (2020) Notes taken showing my thoughts from Jac's video on starting a research blog (2020) "You are setting out on this journey with no answer in sight yet" (Batey, 2020). Notes taken showing my thoughts from Jac's video on starting a research blog (2020) Having made notes on this topic, allowed me to understand the importance of starting a blog for research and keeping it up to date to show my findings. This will support the practice-based research in how I wan...

What is materiality and how can I tackle this question of research?

Image
I decided to research into this term to see what I could find out. Primarily materiality refers to the sensory qualities of different materials used. This allows to create an experience that can impact our understanding and perception in what we are engaging with, which could be an object, spaces or an experience of some sort. To incorpoate materiality within your work of practice, it can elevate the process and understanding in what you are trying to make for the end user/ audience experience. Within the right context you can use materiality as visual lens towards the ideas and themes that you are exploring within your own practice. I feel this is a powerful tool that I need to address within my own practice and try to incorporate it within my own methodology and visual outcomes.  Below shows further notes taken from researching into the different kinds of materiality and how differ...

What is Practice - based Research?

Lyle Skains. (2016, February 12).  The Practice of Research: A Methodology for Practice-Based Research in the Arts  [Video]. YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1xQ0eMxZJU To help better my understanding of this term that has been mentioned in my recent lectures and workshops regarding the Practice of Research in Practice-based Research, I decided to look further into this. I discovered this YouTube video by practice-based researcher  Lyle Skains  that explores all the different terminologies in great detail regarding the practices in the Practice of Research.  Annotations made from researching into practice-based research Here I continue to explore by annotating further my thoughts on this video by Skains which allowed me to adapt a better understanding of practice-based research and how important it is to underpin a specific question of research to answer. Below are further notes taken from my thoughts and k...
