Further thoughts on materiality within my practice
To understand materiality, there should be elements of experimentation. Such experiments have allowed me to adapt a better understanding of my practice, my thought process and one of my design outputs being screen printing.
So, have I answered my question yet?
How can materiality enhance the user/audience experience within your practice?
I feel that the main idea behind materiality for me is the use of materials that can enhance my design process. For me, I wanted to show how print design still holds great value within design communication that reflects modernity from the perspective of materiality.
In essence, to this and within my own practice I have continued to explore the art of print design within different designs through rigorous practice-based research, whilst trying to somewhat understand materiality in a visual way that is personal to me.
Through the lens of typography, I decided to continue to explore how we can see typography through different print combinations, paper stock and inks. All the different experiments have allowed me to test out different printed mediums to see what works best for my final outcomes and show the letter Alef presented in unique ways.
The tactile nature of experimenting with materials to print with, to then scan and make digital, has allowed me to further develop my understanding of working with different compositions that would be transformed into silkscreen prints which would give me my final print outcome as a series of posters.
I feel that what I have archived thus far, has pushed boundaries within my practice and methodology. It has given me a fresh outlook within image making and has somewhat given me the confidence to try new things out and not worry so much about the end results, as it's about the journey you take and the understanding that you get from it which makes all the difference in the end.
